Manila court denies activist’s plea to stay with her baby

A Manila court has upheld its decision to deny the plea of a political prisoner to remain with her baby in the hospital or at least at the prison nursery until the latter turns one year old.

Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 20 Presiding Judge Marivic Balisi-Umali junked the Motion for Reconsideration filed by activist Reina Mae Nasino on July 20 following the denial of her earlier plea.

In the previous ruling, the court denied Nasino’s request to stay at the hospital with her baby after the prosecution said that “to allow accused…to stay in the hospital for another 12 months would entail the government to provide for and maintain escorts for the duration of the movant’s (Nasino) hospital stay.”

This time, in denying the motion, the order read that the public prosecutor averred that the Female Dormitory of the Manila City Jail, where Nasino is currently detained, “has no sufficient facility where the baby can be taken care of as the female dormitory is 387 percent congested, which is not a healthy place for a baby to stay.”
