Marikina bags 68 medals at NCR Palaro 2019
Marikina City elementary school athletes bagged a total of 35 medals – 9 gold, 13 silver, and 13 bronze – at the recently concluded National Capital Region Palaro 2019, their largest haul in the regional sports meet since 2017.
Marikina ranked fourth in the overall medal standings for the Elementary level of the games.
The city won five gold, eight silver, and 20 bronze in the Secondary level medal tally, giving them a final rank of 11th place.
Student athletes from the Shoe Capital of the Philippines delivered the goods after clinching double gold in Sepak Takraw boys.
Alexander Limjuco III in the Elementary level and John Arsyl Tupas in the Secondary level were named Most Valuable Players in Sepak Takraw, and Best Setter and Best Tekong, respectively.
Both players will join the rest of the NCR Palaro gold medalists in representing the 13-time Palarong Pambansa champions in this year’s annual meet in Davao City on April 27 to May 4.
After successfully hosting this year’s NCR Palaro, Marikina City is now in talks with the Department of Education to host the 2020 Palarong Pambansa.
The week-long NCR Palaro 2019 held its closing ceremony Friday, March 1, at the Marikina Sport Center.
