Marikina hikes budget for free tuition

The local government of Marikina has increased its annual budget for free college education, the mayor revealed.

Mayor Marcelino Teodoro said the budget had been increased to P200 million this year from P130 million in 2018.

Teodoro said the city government’s free college education program could now accommodate more students.

“We are expanding the number of city scholars from 7,000 in previous years to 10,000 in 2019. We also built additional school buildings because the number of university students are growing,” the mayor said.

At present, the total population at city-run Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina is at 13,000. Of the number, 10,000 are residents of Marikina.

“These students are full scholars of the city government. We are not requiring them to get high grades, for as long as they pass they are qualified to avail of the program,” Teodoro said.

Although tuition is free at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina, students still need to pay a miscellaneous fee of P150.

“This is so that parents feel they are still sending their children to school. We are assisting them in sending their children to school, so their tuition, laboratory, and even IDs are being paid for by the city government,” Teodoro said. “We are spending P15,000 per student per semester.”
