Marikina revives Nutribun bread distribution
The local government of Marikina City has recently revived the distribution of Nutribun breads to the city’s public school children, as it targets to end malnutrition by 2020.
“We want all children in the city to be healthy and happy by providing them proper nutrition. That’s why I came up with reviving the Nutribun program for 21,000 Kinder and Grade 1 public school children,” Marikina mayor Marcelino Teodoro said.
The Nutribun program was a feeding program implemented in the country in 1970s where students in public schools were given free fortified breads.
“By next year, we are targeting zero malnutrition. We believe that the Nurtibun program is the key to attaining this goal,” he said.
Teodoro said that a number of undernourished students were monitored in the city’s public schools.
“Sa public schools maraming under nourished, kaya ang intervention namin ay feeding program,” he said.
“We found out na ang ibang bata ay walang mga baon kaya wala silang makain na masustansya,” he added.
The city mayor stressed that malnutrition among students in the city should be addressed for it affects their performance in school.
Marikina’s Nutribun, Teodoro explained, is made up of malunggay, squash, and eggs among other pastry ingredients. It will also be served with a glass of milk.
After undergoing the program for 120 days, Teodoro said students will be weighed to assess their health condition. He said their performance in school will also be monitored.
Funding of the Nutribun program will be sourced from the Marikina’s Special Nutrition Fund, Teodoro said.
