Urban garden to rise in Marikina

Manila is converting vacant lots at the Manila Boystown Complex in Marikina into an urban garden.

In a Facebook post, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said members of the Public Recreations Bureau (PRB) have started fixing the site.  The vegetables that will be harvested from the urban garden will feed hundreds of street dwellers under the care of the Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW).

“Tititayakin natin na may mabuting pupuntahan ang mga resources ng ating siyudad (We will make sure that our city’s resources will put to good use),” he said.

Early this month, the city government converted the horseback riding area at the Manila Zoo into an organic urban farm.

Domagoso said this was their way to ensure that the zoo is sustainable despite being closed to the public amid the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) crisis.

The urban farm at the zoo will use animal waste as fertilizer and vegetables harvested will in turn be fed to the animals.
