Marikina Sports Center hosts 2023 Regional Athletic Meet opening

The formal opening of the 2023 Regional Athletic Meet was held today at the Marikina Sports Center, with Mayor Marcy R. Teodoro delivering a message of support for the participating athletes.

"Investing in our youth is caring for our future. Our young athletes represent our dreams, our hopes, and the bright future of our country. Together, we should care for and empower their spirits, support their aspirations, encourage them to compete, and most importantly, help them achieve their goals for themselves, their families, their communities, schools, and our country - for all of us," said the Mayor in his keynote address.

The event was attended by several officials and guests, including DepEd National Capital Region (NCR) Director Wilfredo E. Cabral, DepEd NCR Asst Regional Director Dr. Cristito A. Eco, local government unit representatives, DepEd officials and teachers, parents, and athletes from various cities and municipalities in the NCR.

The athletic meet, which carries the theme "Atletang Pinoy ng Pambansang Punong Rehiyon: Tunay na Kampeon" (National Regional Champion Athletes: Real Champions), is the first regional competition since its postponement in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The sports event is a competition among student-athletes from cities and municipalities in the National Capital Region, and is part of the preparations for the annual Palarong Pambansa. The national competition will be held in the City of Marikina this coming July.
