MMDA defends yellow lane policy

Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) General Manager Jojo Garcia has insisted that the yellow lane policy was not an anti-poor traffic solution strategy.

“[Paano] naging anti-poor ‘to, ang makikinabang mismo commuters, kasi bibilis ‘yong byahe nila. Sawang-sawa na kaming makakita, 3 hours nakatayo sila sa EDSA traffic,” said Garcia in an interview with CNN.

(How can it be anti-poor when it’s the commuters who will benefit from this? Their travel time will be faster. We are tired of seeing them stand inside the bus or waiting for a bus in EDSA for three hours.)

Around 6,500-7,000 buses pass by the EDSA every day, and decongesting the yellow lane would, indeed, be a solution to lessen the traffic, according to the MMDA manager.

He also added that there are currently 97 bus terminals in the Metro Manila, and 46 of these are in EDSA alone. “So integrating small terminals with the big ones are another solution to solve decongestion,” he added.

“Ang direksyon ng government, i-integrate ‘yan sa mga 4 or 5 na malalaking terminal. Hindi pwedeng kahit saan meron (We are looking to integrate terminals with other 4 to 5 terminals),” Garcia said.

Garcia assured that the integrated terminals will be more convenient for the commuters.

“If we go to the integrated terminals, pagdating ng bus mo, mayroon d’yang push cart, nakaaircon ka bibili ka ng ticket (when your bus arrives, there are push carts, its airconditioned when you buy your ticket),” he said.

According to Garcia, they have conducted meetings with commuters, and promised them that the fare will be the same.
